A simple guide on how to add custom domain to Blogger using GoDaddy?

Introduction

Why custom domains? It's easier to remember, right? I mean you could use the free version with subdomains that are offered but to help your audience and to build a unique brand it is important to have a custom domain.

It's not easy. I get it. Sometimes the names are already taken but be creative, think of something unique to your brand, your content and what you are trying to sell.

Note: If you already have a GoDaddy domain, skip to SECTION 4 on how to add it to Blogger!

Section 1: Why GoDaddy for Your Custom Domain?

  • You can use several different domain name sites to register your name:

All of these have an offering. I chose GoDaddy as it offered a better longer-term deal with GoDaddy you can purchase a domain for 1, 3, 5, and even 10 years. Some registrars have a better deal for 1 year and some offer a multi-extension package.

Pick the one that suits your needs.

Note: GoDaddy offers a website builder for FREE, this is a trial basically you get to try out a landing site for your domain and pay after the trial ends.

Section 2: Preparing Your GoDaddy Account

Log in to your GoDaddy Account > Go to Domains (Under My Accounts)

This is where we will be making changes to add the custom domains. You need to familiarise yourself with the site.

Under domains, on the left side you will DNS (Domain Name server), click on that.

The DNS records are listed here; you can add a new record (which we will be doing) but this is just to inform you where we will make the change.

You will also see some existing records of CNAME (this is what we will edit or update if one exists already). A canonical Name is a type of resource record in DNS that are aliases that map one domain name to another.

Example: You have an existing blog under the name jakesully.blogspot.com and now you bought a custom domain from GoDaddy called jakesully.com (just an example, sorry jake!) so now you can link the two together so when you someone visits blogspot.com version they will be redirected to jakesully.com.

We will be doing something similar but with a few changes.

Section 3: Blogger Settings

Access Blogger Settings

In Blogger, you need to go to settings, scroll down to Publishing and add your custom domain, in the image below I used poor Jake Sully again...but you should add your custom domain here and click save!

Add Your Custom Domain

Don't worry you will see a similar error message.

From the error message you need the two listed CNAMES:

For example, the 2 cnames we saw in the image were (note: they could be different for you)

1) Name: www, Destionation: ghs.google.com
2) Name: unbaivgsr5ux, Destination: gv-il3owsdhqh4e44.dv.gogglehosted.com

You will need these later on when adding them in the DNS records.

Section 4: Adding Your Custom Domain

Back in GoDaddy DNS Records section:

Delete or Update Existing Records

Before this, if there are any records with the same name i.e. www, do delete those or update them with the new value above.

Add New DNS Records

Click on Add New Record and select as follows

1. Type as CNAME
2. Name is www
3. Value is ghs.google.com

TTL can be the default. Click Save.

Repeat this again to add the second DNS record for the other CNAME...

Section 5: Verifying and Finalizing

Return to Blogger

Go back to Blogger: Remember the error message when you tried to enter custom domain...Now try again, this time it should save without any error messages.

Enable HTTPS and HTTPS Redirect

Next, scroll down and also enable HTTPS availability and HTTS redirect.

Note: Status under HTTPS availability takes time to update, it will change the message and eventually be HTTPS compatible.

That's it!!

Once the DNS records are updated, you will be able to use your custom domain for your blog.

Note: There will be a message of insecure connection, don't worry as mentioned above the HTTPS status will update and the error will go away.

Conclusion

Get some coffee, put your feet up, and watch something while it happens. Thanks for reading. Comment below if you had any issues or if this helped.
